GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

Fewer Shootings This June Over Last As GRPD Ups Staff

June saw decreased gun violence in Grand Rapids compared to the summer prior. Robberies and auto thefts also continue to decline, as year-to-date totals fall below 2025.

Grand Rapids has had nine homicides through June, more than half of which took place across two incidents in January and May.

June had one shooting death. Grand Rapids Police Department charged 20-year-old Jonel Arroyo-Moran in the June 1 murder of Terry Corona-Tenorio, 26. There were two non-fatal shootings in June, according to the GRPD Crime Dashboard.

In June 2025, three persons were shot fatally and four non-fatally in the city, marking a decline in June gun violence.

Non-fatal shootings have declined year-to-date. Eleven persons were shot non-fatally  in Grand Rapids from January to June, compared with 15 non-fatal shootings at this point in 2025.

GRPD has arrested suspects in every homicide that has taken place this year. At a public safety committee meeting last week, Police Chief Joe Trigg noted the national clearance rate—the percentage of cases considered closed—is 55%. The department’s 2025 clearance rate was 71%.

The family of one of this year’s homicide victims invited the GRPD officers to the victim’s funeral service. The family, who went unnamed, thanked the officers for their response and investigation.

“(Officers) want to solve a case. They want to see accountability. They want to see justice for these families,” Trigg  said.

There were 80 robberies through June of this year, compared with 90 as of June 2025. In 2021, year-to-date robberies were double their current count.

Auto thefts have dropped by 29% year-to-date, with 184 through June. Trigg credited the declines to increased staffing.

“Our staffing is up, and we have young men and women out there working, appreciating the city they work for and the department they work for,” Trigg said.

Grand Rapids had 14 recorded fatal overdoses year-to-date. The department has recovered 193 illegally-possessed guns through June.
